Kars Alfrink is an affiliated researcher and recent PhD from TU Delft who translates 15+ years of interaction design and entrepreneurial experience into research on contestable, democratically governed AI systems. He blends hands-on product and game-design sensibilities with critical sociopolitical theory to design public AI that remains subject to societal control. Kars’s current work, including the People’s Compute project, uniquely connects contestability at the application level to questions of infrastructure sovereignty by interrogating data centers, compute allocation and independence from tech oligopolies. He cofounded a playful design studio (Hubbub) and Tech Solidarity NL, reflecting a long-standing commitment to collective, justice-oriented tech practice that informs his research methods. Based in Utrecht, he advises organizations through his consultancy SORCEREE, translating sociotechnical critique into practical design interventions.
