Kyle Briggs is a biophysicist-turned-entrepreneur and Vanier Scholar who builds bridges between academic research and commercial deep-tech ventures. He co-founded Northern Nanopore Instruments—spun out of his PhD work on solid-state nanopores—and led it through acquisition by Oxford Nanopore Technologies, demonstrating productization of complex nanoscale tools. With 11+ years in research and four years mentoring startups, he now serves as Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Ottawa and writes on policy and commercialization challenges for Canadian deep tech at CanInnovate. Kyle speaks regularly at international conferences on scalable nanopore platforms and DNA storage, and has been recognized with the CMC Douglas R. Colton Medal for Research Excellence. He combines hands-on lab expertise (from controlled breakdown nanopore fabrication to single-molecule sensing) with practical startup leadership and an uncommon focus on policy-driven ecosystem change.
