Luca Rebuffi is a physicist and optics specialist with 11+ years designing and simulating high-performance X-ray optics, currently a staff scientist in the Optics Group at Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source. He co-authored the globally distributed OASYS optical simulation suite and has contributed to the optical design of all feature beamlines for the APS-U upgrade. Trained in physics (summa cum laude) and software engineering, Luca blends hands-on optical engineering with software development and a PhD in Materials Science, enabling him to translate complex physics into robust simulation and control tools. Lately he is applying AI/ML to stabilize and control photon beam quality at experiments, bridging cutting-edge algorithms with real-world synchrotron operations. An unusual combination of thermal, vacuum, mechanical and software experience across industry and large research facilities gives him a rare systems-level perspective on beamline design and performance.
