Maarten Van Der Velde is an applied cognitive scientist and senior researcher with a decade of experience building computational models to understand memory and optimize adaptive learning systems. Currently finishing a PhD at the University of Groningen, he has led projects on predicting learner performance, modelling forgetting across timescales, and quantifying the benefits of adaptive learning in both pandemic and normal contexts. He combines hands-on cognitive modelling (including teaching ACT-R practicals) with data-driven evaluation to turn theoretical mechanisms into practical learning interventions. Based in the Netherlands, Maarten works at MemoryLab and Precision Cognition Labs, bringing academic rigor to real-world edtech problems and a demonstrated knack for disentangling cognitive factors that underlie retrieval performance. An often overlooked strength is his experience translating complex models into teachable tools and competitions, having co-organised a regional Brain Olympiad to engage younger audiences.
