Summary
Marco Toffolon is a Professor of environmental fluid mechanics at the University of Trento with over two decades of research and teaching focused on physical limnology, hydro-thermodynamics of lakes, sediment transport, and tidal/fluvial morphodynamics. He founded and leads the Physical Limnology Laboratory (PhyLL), building an internationally connected research group that has trained many MSc and PhD students who continue the field globally. His work spans analytical minimal models, 3D numerical hydrodynamics and emerging machine-learning applications to water quality and eutrophication, blending theoretical rigor with practical environmental management. As Deputy Director for International Relations he has expanded departmental collaborations worldwide and held visiting positions at Eawag, EPFL, Delft and Sun Yat-sen University, reflecting a strong record of cross-border scientific exchange. Notably, his research trajectory shifted from tidal and fluvial morphodynamics toward lake dynamics in 2005, creating one of Italy’s most active physical limnology hubs.
