Martin Vickers is a Senior Scientist and research computing specialist with over a decade of experience building and managing HPC, storage and virtualisation infrastructure for genomics and environmental research. Holding a PhD in Planetary Physics plus an MSc in Remote Sensing and a BSc in Computer Science, he blends deep scientific training with practical systems engineering to support large-scale sequencing projects and plant phenotyping with drone remote sensing. At the John Innes Centre he leads genomics computing initiatives, helped procure multi-million pound GPU and distributed storage systems, and contributes to institutional research computing governance. He previously designed and ran virtualization and HPC services for university institutes, consulting on IoT and telemetry backends for industry clients as well. An active open-source contributor and author of widely cited research, he pairs reproducible bioinformatics tooling with hands-on ops skills and a personal penchant for building things and exploration beyond the lab.
