Top SchoolMatīss R is a researcher and developer with 14 years of experience specializing in neural machine translation and statistical NLP, currently based in Chiyoda, Japan. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Latvia and has combined academic rigor with applied research roles at AIST, The University of Tokyo, and Tilde. His work spans neural network modeling for highly inflected languages, hybrid NMT approaches, and practical improvements for multi-word expressions—skills honed during visiting stints at University of Tartu and Charles University. At Tilde and AIST he bridges research and production, shipping models and tools that improve real-world translation systems. Colleagues describe him as a researcher who moves smoothly between deep experiments and deployable engineering, often focusing on linguistic nuances that standard NMT setups overlook.
