Matt Hipsey is a Professor and co-director of the Centre for Water and Spatial Science at the University of Western Australia with over two decades of experience advancing aquatic system science, ecohydrology and environmental modelling. He leads research translating hydrology, hydrodynamics, microbial ecology and biogeochemistry into practical tools for water resource management, including real-time environmental observatories and next-generation aquatic ecosystem models. His work quantifies how land use and hydro-climatic variability drive water quality, algal blooms, pathogen dynamics, sediment biogeochemistry and wetland biodiversity under climate change. Known for bridging field process studies with advanced sensor networks and hydroinformatics, he provides decision-makers with evidence-based projections to protect and restore aquatic function. An interdisciplinary thinker, he combines engineering training and a PhD in environmental biology to tackle both mechanistic science and applied modelling challenges.
