Matt Welsh
Summary
🤩
RockstarMatt Welsh is an astronomer-turned-software leader based in Mountain View with over two decades of experience bridging hands-on engineering, UX design, and computational astronomy. He built and ran High Valley Observatory, designing custom instrumentation and publishing variable-precision orbital tools while evolving narrowband and solar astrophotography workflows from Silicon Valley’s light-polluted skies. Professionally he has led UX and identity teams at PayPal and Intuit and earlier architected extensible Java frameworks and developer tools at companies like Borland, Quest, and Cast Iron. Comfortable shifting between low-level engineering and human-centered design, he combines rigorous orbital computation skills with a designer’s eye for user flows and visual assets. Outside work he prepares fossils, designs LEGO modulars, and experiments with high-powered lasers—details that underscore a persistent maker mindset and curiosity across disciplines.
