Top SchoolMatthew Humphreys is a Senior Scientist at NIOZ with nine years of focused experience deciphering how anthropogenic CO2 is absorbed by the oceans and drives ocean acidification. His work blends precise measurements and chemical speciation modelling to trace carbon’s journey through marine biogeochemical systems, developed through roles at UEA, Southampton and a PhD in Ocean and Earth Sciences. He combines field-based insights (including work on high-magnesium calcite dissolution at BIOS) with process-based modelling to reveal subtle interactions between the carbon cycle and other nutrient and carbonate systems. Based in Den Burg, he brings a maritime perspective informed by Cambridge geology training and extensive UK–Netherlands research collaborations. Colleagues value his ability to translate complex carbonate chemistry into actionable understanding for ocean-carbon assessments and policy-relevant science.
