Michael Cox is a Research Professor of Computer Science at Wright State University with over a decade of experience studying artificial intelligence and cognitive systems. His work focuses on how deliberative goals shape high-level reasoning in humans and machines, spanning goal-driven autonomy, volitional explanation, multistrategy learning, case-based reasoning, story understanding, mixed-initiative planning, and computational introspection. He investigates not just how cognitive mechanisms operate, but how goals arise and evolve over time, bringing a rare emphasis on goal dynamics to AI research. With a PhD from Georgia Tech and a joint appointment in Computer Science & Engineering, he blends deep theoretical insight with applied interdisciplinary collaboration. Notably, his research aims to bridge human and machine deliberation, making systems that can explain and adapt their goals as situations unfold.
