Top SchoolMichael Cuthbert is a computational music pioneer and founder/CTO who blends 16+ years of software engineering with two decades of academic leadership to build practical, scalable systems for music education and research. He created the music21 toolkit, led MIT’s largest undergraduate-focused software research lab, and secured tenure in the humanities primarily for algorithm and software contributions—an uncommon academic trajectory. As Chief Officer (Music) and Principal Software Engineer at Artusi he shipped a profitable, web-native music-learning platform used by top conservatories, pairing TypeScript/WebAudio front-ends with Python-based automated musical assessment and CI-backed engineering. An active open-source contributor, he’s improved testing and notation features in projects like Jupyter’s nbconvert and the VexFlow music-rendering library. Known for recruiting diverse engineering teams and winning MIT’s top teaching awards, he now seeks computational and management challenges that shorten a 5,000-mile commute to Honolulu.
