Top SchoolMichael D. Smith is a seasoned digital imaging and IP consultant with two decades of experience helping studios, standards bodies, and tech firms solve complex image and video challenges. As Managing Member of Wavelet Consulting and former co-chair of the BDA UHD video subgroup, he helped define Ultra HD Blu-ray video requirements and co-edited the JPEG 2000 High-Throughput standard. His color science work earned a screen credit on Mary Poppins Returns and his expert testimony in over 40 IP matters has contributed to roughly $1.7 billion in settlements and awards. A SMPTE Fellow and editor of a definitive history of 3D cinema, he blends deep signal-processing expertise (BS/MS EE, UCLA) with practical standards and patent experience across HDR, compression, and image quality. Notably, he pairs academic rigor with hands-on studio and courtroom impact—rare for an engineer working at the intersection of standards, cinema, and IP.
