Summary
👤
SeniorMichael Medford is a Staff Software Engineer and astrophysicist who specializes in designing and scaling massive data processing pipelines to turn intractable scientific and industrial problems into production-grade systems. With a PhD from UC Berkeley and a decade of experience across startups and product teams, he has led projects that cut costs 80x in per-unit processing and migrated monoliths to independently deployable services while preserving uptime. His work spans satellite imagery calibration, environmental monitoring for methane leaks, and building the world’s largest materials datastore—combining statistical rigor with pragmatic engineering. Formerly a physics teacher and theatre founder, he brings uncommon communication and collaboration skills to technical leadership and cross-functional integrations. Checkered experience in academia and industry gives him a knack for extracting tiny signals from noisy, multi-petabyte datasets and shipping reliable, test-covered infrastructure.
