Summary
Michael O is a PhD student at the University of Sheffield researching long-term mitigation of amine degradation in solvent-based carbon capture as part of the Green Industrial Futures CDT. A Chartered Chemical Engineer and IChemE member, he brings nearly four decades of hands-on process industry experience across food, metals, bulk inorganics, petrochemicals and fine chemicals, spanning capital projects, process improvement and troubleshooting. He has worked for consultancies, producers and equipment suppliers and now runs his own engineering services company, blending practical operations know-how with academic rigor. His supervisors are Professors Mathieu Lucquiaud and John Gibbins, and his work aims to make carbon capture more durable and cost-effective in real-world plant conditions. Outside work he’s an avid walker who completed the Pennine Way in stages, an assistant U16 rugby coach, and a long-time Aikido practitioner—activities that reflect his practical mentorship style and collaborative approach to problem solving.
