Mikael Boden is a Professor and group leader in bioinformatics at the University of Queensland with over two decades of experience applying AI, machine learning and probabilistic modelling to genomics and molecular systems biology. He combines a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with deep hands-on work in data-driven bioinformatics, focusing on heterogeneous data integration, probabilistic computational models and problems such as protein sorting, transcriptional regulation and protein engineering. Mikael has bridged computer science and biology since rejoining UQ in 2003, holding affiliate roles across molecular bioscience and IT faculties and collaborating widely with structural biologists, protein engineers and neuroscientists. Notably, his research trajectory reflects a deliberate shift from sequence learning to exploiting high-throughput biological data, translating theoretical ML methods into practical insights about cellular organization and protein function.
