Nick O'Leary is a seasoned software leader and founder with 17+ years of experience, currently serving as CTO and Founder of FlowFuse where he leads the OpenJS Node-RED project and builds a low-code development platform. He spent over 19 years at IBM driving projects across pervasive messaging, cloud deployments and emerging technologies, including hands-on work with IoT retrofits and industrial sensor projects using Raspberry Pi and Arduino. Creator and long-time maintainer of Node-RED, Nick combines full-stack engineering—front-end dashboard work to back-end MQTT clients—with project governance and community stewardship. An active open-source contributor, he has improved widely-used projects like the Node-RED dashboard and the pubsubclient MQTT library, and serves on the OASIS MQTT Technical Committee and OpenJS Cross Project Council. Based in Southampton, he pairs rigorous academic roots (1st class BSc Computer Science, Warwick) with a practical maker’s curiosity that surfaces in both large-scale enterprise integrations and playful IoT tinkering.
