Top SchoolNicolò Calcavecchia is a technology leader and CTO based in Lombardy, Italy, with 13 years of experience building and scaling distributed cloud systems from research prototypes to production at companies like Zendesk and now Apylon. He pairs deep academic roots—a PhD in Computer Science focused on decentralized autonomic systems and autoscaling algorithms—with hands-on engineering and management, having progressed from software engineer to Director of Engineering. Nicolò founded a Ruby on Rails startup early in his career, giving him entrepreneurial instincts and product empathy alongside his enterprise experience. His background includes publishing research on VM placement and deploying large-scale distributed experiments on 100+ EC2 nodes, evidence of both theoretical rigor and pragmatic execution. Trained in leadership at Berkeley Haas, he blends technical depth in distributed systems with people management and strategic roadmap delivery. Colleagues describe him as a pragmatic problem-solver who turns complex distributed challenges into reliable, scalable products.
