Summary
Paul Holden is a freelance heritage professional, architectural historian, author and editor with over 20 years’ experience in conservation and curatorship, including two decades at the National Trust’s Lanhydrock. As Editor at Historic Buildings & Places and a long-standing freelance history specialist, he combines hands-on building conservation knowledge with scholarly research in architectural history, cartography and collecting. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and an active leader in diocesan and cathedral fabric advisory roles, he advises on historic fabric, policy and best practice across Cornwall and beyond. He is a seasoned lecturer and peer reviewer who has presented for institutions such as the Wallace Collection and Royal Institution and taught internationally in the US, Czech Republic, Eire and Scotland. Paul’s work blends academic rigour—rooted in a Southampton master’s thesis on architectural history—with practical project delivery, having managed conservation teams at Winchester College. He also holds civic leadership roles in regional heritage and family history societies, reflecting a rare mix of scholarship, editorial skill and community stewardship.
