Paul Savala is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Program Director for the BS in Applied Data Science at St. Edward's University, blending a decade of teaching and industry experience to build data science curricula and institutions. He founded the Certificate in Data Analysis and the Introduction to Data Science course—complete with interactive Jupyter Notebook labs and a textbook—and now directs the i4 Institute (2024–2026). His work spans academic research in analytic number theory to applied machine learning from a prior data scientist role, where he built de-duplication systems, custom search engines, and fraud-detection models for retailers. A co-PI on a $1.5M NSF grant and multiple teaching-award winner, he pairs classroom innovation with grant-funded program building and real-world data product experience. Based in Austin, he brings a rare combination of rigorous mathematical training (PhD, University of Iowa) and practical data engineering applied to education and ecology-focused scholarship.
