Senior🎓
Top SchoolPhilip Daly is a senior software engineer in Tucson with over 30 years of hands-on experience and a decade in senior roles, specializing in observatory control systems, real-time Linux, device drivers and end-to-end scientific data pipelines. He has architected and implemented software for major astronomical projects (NOAO, LSST) and runs the computing stack for a private observatory, combining systems administration, networking, and hardware control. Comfortable across C, Java, Python, Tcl/tk and LabVIEW, he bridges embedded real-time code with web interfaces, data collection/analysis and operational automation. His background in physics and astronomy (BSc, MSc) informs pragmatic designs for instrumentation and large-scale observatory control, including early work on TMT control concepts. A regular conference speaker and published author, he pairs deep technical craft with clear documentation and stakeholder communication. Notably, he blends decades-old systems knowledge (VMS, transputers, EPICS) with modern Linux and git-based workflows, making him uniquely effective at migrating and maintaining scientific infrastructure.
