Ricardo Silva is a senior software engineer based in Almada, Portugal, with 15 years of experience building backend services and geospatial data processing pipelines. He specializes in the Python stack and GIS technologies, having delivered production systems using Django, GeoServer, GeoNode, Apache Airflow and xarray across research and commercial projects. Ricardo co-founded a geospatial software shop and has led development of systems that transform raw satellite imagery into operational products for end users. He is an active open-source contributor to notable projects like GeoNode and pycsw, improving temporal handling, WSGI refactors, and test coverage for standards-compliant geospatial catalogs. Comfortable with both raster and vector workflows, he blends domain knowledge in environmental engineering with pragmatic engineering to ship reliable data services. Colleagues benefit from his mix of hands-on coding, training experience, and a history of bridging research-grade EO tooling to production deployments.

pycsw is an OGC CSW server implementation written in Python. pycsw fully implements the OpenGIS Catalogue Service Implementation Specification [Catalogue Service for the Web]. Initial development started in 2010 (more formally announced in 2011). The project is certified OGC Compliant, and is an OGC Reference Implementation. pycsw allows for the publishing and discovery of geospatial metadata via numerous APIs (CSW 2/CSW 3, OpenSearch, OAI-PMH, SRU). Existing repositories of geospatial metadata can also be exposed, providing a standards-based metadata and catalogue component of spatial data infrastructures. pycsw is Open Source, released under an MIT license, and runs on all major platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X). Please read the docs at https://pycsw.org/docs for more information.
Role in this project:
userBack-end Developer
Contributions:5 reviews, 58 commits, 31 PRs in 6 years 10 months
Contributions summary:Ricardo primarily contributed to the pycsw server implementation, focusing on core functionality and stability. Their work includes fixing identified bugs, such as KVP normalization issues, and refactoring parts of the code, specifically the CGI wrapper, to leverage the WSGI wrapper's code. They also implemented XML canonicalization for test results, and refactored the parsing of KVP parameters, alongside other cosmetic code changes to comply with PEP8 standards.

GeoNode/geonode

Oct 2014 - Dec 2021

GeoNode is an open source platform that facilitates the creation, sharing, and collaborative use of geospatial data.
Role in this project:
userBackend Developer
Contributions:15 reviews, 34 commits, 20 PRs in 7 years 3 months
Contributions summary:Ricardo primarily contributed to backend development within the GeoNode project, focusing on model modifications, testing, and template integration. Their work involved changing temporal extent fields to DateTime, fixing PEP8 errors for code style consistency, and adding support for datetime in layer, map, and document temporal extent fields. The user also added tests for group logo presence in list views and implemented features related to sending messages to multiple users and groups.
