Senior🎓
Top SchoolRobert Tang-kong is a Staff Software Engineer based in California with 8 years of experience bridging advanced materials science and production-grade scientific software. He holds a PhD from Stanford in Materials Science and has translated deep domain expertise in ALD protection, electrocatalysis, and in-situ synchrotron characterization into data-driven research and tooling. At SLAC he develops and debugs experiment control systems for time-critical x-ray beam experiments and contributes to the multi-lab bluesky ecosystem, working with Python, Conda, Qt, and EPICS. Previously at SSRL he led cross-lab data infrastructure and adaptive experimentation efforts using Gaussian processes, Bayesian optimization, and reinforcement learning to accelerate beamline science. He combines hands-on lab experience (ALD, electrochemistry, vacuum systems) with scalable software practices, enabling better experiments and reproducible data pipelines. Notably, his work has produced measurable experimental improvements—such as multi-fold increases in catalyst adhesion and device lifetimes—underscoring an ability to move from hypothesis to operational impact.
