Top SchoolRyan Self is a senior software developer with 13 years of experience building large-scale streaming and distributed systems, currently shaping customer data platforms at Shopify. He has designed high-throughput pipelines (100B+ Debezium events, 3TB state) using Flink and led operational on-call practices to meet strict freshness SLOs that supported hundreds of millions in GMV. Previously he architected streaming platforms and parsing engines at startup scale, cutting operational costs and speeding development through tooling and orchestration innovations. Comfortable across the stack, Ryan pairs a functional-programming mindset (Scala, Akka) with pragmatic system design and mentorship, having guided engineers through their first production streaming deliveries. His background in the Navy and dual degrees in CS and Philosophy give him a disciplined, systems-thinking approach to complex, customer-driven problems.
