Sam Hodge is a seasoned technical director and machine learning engineer who bridges feature film visual effects and production-ready ML systems, with over two decades of hands-on experience in shading, lighting, rendering and pipeline engineering. As a founder and senior research engineer, he designs end-to-end solutions—from client engagement to deployed tooling—applying Python, C++ and GPU training workflows to problems in VFX, digital humans and video mattes. He built and maintained an Arnold+Houdini rendering and shading pipeline used on Hollywood features and now focuses on human-in-the-loop ML automation for media through ventures like Kognat and Tokgan. Sam’s background in character rigging, deformation and procedural asset encapsulation gives him a rare combination of artistic eye and low-level systems know-how, and he often converts cinematic problems into robust engineering solutions. Based in Adelaide, he pairs academic rigor from a BSc(Hons) in biochemistry and computer science studies with practical delivery across research and production environments.
