Top SchoolSteve Arnold is a Principal Scientist and seasoned open-source engineer with 22 years of technical experience and 25+ years supporting technical customers, specializing in earth and atmospheric science tools, IV&V, risk and hazard assessment, and data systems. Based in Santa Maria, CA, he combines deep GNU/Linux expertise—20+ years with open source and a decade as a Gentoo developer—with practical systems engineering and test & evaluation for range meteorology and flight safety. A long-time maintainer of Ada toolchains and embedded packages for Gentoo and an OpenEmbedded contributor, he blends low-level toolchain work with applied modeling and GIS workflows. An experienced educator with nearly 2,000 hours of classroom training, he also drives open-source outreach and developer mentoring while leading engineering and business development at VCT Labs. Notably, he’s been building operating systems since 1991 and channels that DIY, systems-first mindset into robust, auditable scientific software.
