Steven Schofield is a Professor of Physics at UCL with 12 years of postdoctoral and academic experience probing and controlling matter at the atomic scale. He specializes in cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscopy and synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopies to study electronic properties of semiconductors and 2D materials, and he applies both atom-by-atom manipulation and chemical approaches to tune those properties. A former EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellow and ARC Australian Postdoctoral Fellow, he began his STM work during a PhD at UNSW and has since built a research program that bridges surface physics, surface chemistry and condensed matter. Based in London, he combines deep experimental craftsmanship with synchrotron expertise, often exploiting complementary spectroscopies to reveal phenomena invisible to a single method.
