Umut Güçlü is a Principal Investigator and ELLIS Scholar who leads the Neural Coding Lab and the Donders AI for Neurotech Lab, bridging neuroscience and AI to reverse-engineer in vivo neural computation for “brain reading” and “brain writing.” With 11 years of experience and over 75 publications including in eLife and NeurIPS, he ranks among the top 10 most-cited researchers worldwide in Neural Decoding, Neural Encoding, and NeuroAI. He has secured ≈€2.5M in funding, collaborates with industry partners on neuroprosthetics, and contributed foundational work showing homomorphic relations between brain representations and deep network layers. An educator and program coordinator, he has taught and supervised across AI and cognitive neuroscience, built on-prem GPU clusters, and edited special issues on explainability and inpainting. Beyond academia, his work earned the 2024 Computable Award for digital innovation in visual prostheses, and he’s known for balancing deep technical rigor with practical neurotechnology translation—often seen at the lab with his two pups, Kara and Kuzu.
