Top SchoolUtpal Kumar is a computational and data science research specialist based in Berkeley with nine years of experience applying software development, numerical modeling, and machine learning to geophysics. He has led projects at UC Berkeley that fuse smartphone MyShake data, automated surface-wave tomography, and 3D box-tomography to reveal deep structures beneath the Yellowstone hotspot and improve seismic monitoring. Comfortable bridging code and science, he develops reproducible tools for data processing, algorithmic phase identification, and clustering geodetic signals using methods like Dynamic Time Warping. His background spans academia and international collaborations (Belmont Forum RESIST), reflecting both domain depth in seismic/infrasound analysis and practical engineering across web and desktop applications. Known for turning messy observational data into interpretable models, he combines a PhD in geosciences with hands-on software craftsmanship to deliver technology-driven insights into Earth processes.
