Vilhjalmur Thorsteinsson is a veteran software entrepreneur and board leader with four decades of experience building and scaling companies across software, telecom, gaming and AI/NLP. He co-founded Iceland Software in 1983, architected major compiler work in Ada, led Common Technologies at Baan/CODA, and later chaired CCP Games during its global expansion. As founder and CEO/chair of Miðeind he has combined rule-based and neural approaches to Icelandic NLP, partnering with OpenAI for GPT-4’s initial Icelandic launch and publishing research as recently as ACL 2023. He remains a hands-on developer—authoring open-source tools in Python, C++ and Go and contributing Python 3 compatibility fixes to prominent ML repos like Tensor2Tensor—while investing in and chairing datacenter, cloud and fintech ventures that achieved strategic exits. Unusually for a technologist, he also served as an elected representative on Iceland’s Constitutional Council and has chaired national energy-policy and infrastructure committees, blending technical depth with public-policy impact.
