Will Handley is an Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow based in Cambridge who blends theoretical cosmology with cutting-edge data science to probe the universe from the Big Bang to cosmic dawn. He leads development of novel Bayesian machine learning and nested sampling techniques, applying them across cosmology, particle physics and diverse domains such as protein folding and telecommunications. As leader of the REACH data analysis team and convener of the GAMBIT cosmology working group, he connects telescope experiments, collider constraints and community software to test models of dark matter, neutrinos and modified gravity. His group is pioneering the fusion of nested sampling with Simulation Based Inference to make Bayesian methods more interpretable and applicable to high-dimensional, simulator-driven problems. Beyond academia he co-leads Polychord Ltd and has a track record of transferring methods between fields—an unusual cross-pollination that accelerates both discovery and practical impact. He also taught Cambridge’s Part III Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology course, reflecting a commitment to training the next generation of quantitative scientists.
